Installation
The SIGEpi program is distributed through a CD or
by this web site. An interactive program allows the installation of
the software and access to other related materials such as the User's
Manual, Data, Case Studies, and projects that support the self learning
tutorials and use of SIGEpi.
Download. The SIGEpi software may
be downloaded through the links below. This is a Trial Version
containing all of SIGEpi's functions, with the only restriction that
it will work for 90 days after the installation date. After this
period it will be necessary to obtain a user license. If you need
a user license, please make a request to PAHO/HDM/HA.

Case studies. A group of case studies were prepared,
based on real public health problems, in order to demonstrate SIGEpi's
processes and functions. The purpose of the case studies is to offer
users support, through examples, in self-teaching for the SIGEpi software.
Each case study presents the problem's context and the questions to
respond, describes the specific context, data, and steps to take through
the use of SIGEpi.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How can you obtain a SIGEpi Users' License
SIGEpi is part of a PAHO initiative for the application
and development of GIS in Public Health in order to strengthen the
analytical capacity of the member countries' ministries of health.
In this regard, SIGEpi is an instrument of technical cooperation and
is distributed as part of a cooperation project which includes training, technical support in the development of applications
and application of analytical methods and training materials among
others.
To request technical cooperation, follow the suggestions in the Terms of Distribution
and Type of User's Licenses
in the section SIGEpi Features
Which are the cartographic data formats that SIGEpi can handle ?
Digital maps can
be handled in following formats, ESRI Shapefile, ArcInfo Coverage,
GRID, VMP, files of borders of EpiMap versions 1 and 2, and a broad
set of formats for aerial and satellite photographs and images. Is it possible to incorporate in the analysis with SIGEpi
tables in dBase and EXCEL formats, or others created by routine
information systems? YES. Tables in dBase,
FoxPro, EXCEL, and other formats can be incorporated into SIGEpi.
To do this, it is necessary to create a new database or to open an
existing database and import the tables to the open database. Once
the table is imported to the database, it can be linked to the cartographic
layer and display its data on a map. Does SIGEpi provide the cartographic bases needed for applying a GIS in health? No. The SIGEpi distribution
package has a minimal cartographic data set with the goal of showing
some of its functions. This data will not meet the users needs, which
means they will have to acquire and manage the necessary cartographic
and health data for a specific application. Consult the resources
section containing links to Internet sites with
access to cartographic data
that is publicly distributed, and some is free. Is it possible to process a data file created from an EpiInfo
questionnaire in SIGEpi?
YES. In the case of users of EpiInfo 6.4 or previous versions:
the data file generated by EpiInfo (extension .rec) can be imported
to the SIGEpi database directly. Be sure to have an open database
in SIGEpi.
In the case of EpiInfo 2000 users: it can
directly open the EpiInfo 2000 database or
import the specific table to the open database
in SIGEpi.
Is it possible to reuse the boundary files (.bnd) that are handled with EpiMap
v. 1 and 2? YES. SiGEpi has the ability
to directly read boundary files in EpiMap versions 1 and 2 formats.
When incorporating a layer in a map, simply indicate that the format
of the cartographic base is an EpiMap Boundary File (*.BND), SIGEpi
automatically converts it to a Shapefile format.
In the case of EpiInfo/EpiMap 2000 users: it can directly open the
cartographic databases since there are already in a Shapefile format.
